What Is DNA Paternity Test?

Deoxyribonucleic acid is abbreviated as DNA. And it’s your mother’s and father’s genetic material that you inherit. When we mention paternity, we are referring to fatherhood.

As a result, a DNA paternity test use a test swab to identify whether a guy is the biological father of the kid. DNA paternity tests are the most reliable way to determine whether a guy is the biological father of a kid.

One thing to keep in mind when taking a DNA test in Ghana is that a biological child shares 50% of their DNA with their biological mother and 50% with their biological father.

A DNA paternity test compares a DNA sample from an alleged father and a DNA sample from a child during a test swab to determine whether the two individuals are likely to share a biological relationship as father and child.

Keep in mind that if the swabbing is not done by a professional or if a medical professional is not present, the results cannot be used in court.

As a result, when conducting a DNA test, it would be preferable if you took your alleged child to a DNA Diagnostic Center (DDC) or invited a specialist to your home.

How accurate is a DNA paternity test?

DNA paternity tests are extremely accurate. A test can show with 99.9% accuracy if a man isn’t a person’s biological father.

As of now, a DNA test is the most reliable and advanced method of determining parenthood. It is almost 100% accurate. When the results come in, it is usually in the percentage form and not in a straightforward ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer. If you get over 99%, it means that you are definitely the father.

NOTABLE FACTS ABOUT DNA TEST

If one of the participants is a chimera, a DNA test may not be valid. This means the person possesses two sets of DNA rather than just one, as most people have. It’s a rare occurrence, but it might happen.

DNA testing is done by swabbing the insides of both the child’s and the purported father’s cheeks. It can be performed by a medical professional (in a clinic/laboratory or at home) or by anyone.

The swabs containing DNA-carrying cells are subsequently delivered to a laboratory for analysis. Following that, the result will be available as soon as the data has been processed.

One thing to remember is that if the swabbing is not done by a professional (or in the presence of one), the results cannot be used as evidence in court. Therefore, if it is important to you, take your alleged child to a clinic/lab or invite a professional to your home.

Reasons Why Most People Perform DNA Test In Ghana

Establishing paternity can be important for several reasons. It can help:

  • Gain legal rights to child support, child custody, Social Security benefits and inheritance.
  • Identify links to genetic conditions that can affect your long-term health.
  • Most people perform DNA tests in Ghana for immigration purposes. When traveling with your child to other countries like the United States, the US embassy may ask you to provide DNA test results that prove you’re the child’s biological parent.

How Much does it Cost to Conduct a DNA Test in Ghana?

In Ghana, the cost of a DNA test is mainly determined by the type of hospital or laboratory used and the number of people who will be tested.

A DNA paternity test in Ghana costs between GHC 2,000 and GHC 4,000 on average.

The paternity test, which is performed during pregnancy using chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis, is the most expensive. The cost of these tests ranges from GHC 5,000 to GHC 10,000.

Because a DNA test is such a crucial aspect of your life, you must think carefully before proceeding.

What You Will Need To Perform DNA Test In Ghana

All that’s needed to perform a DNA paternity test is a DNA sample from the possible father, child in question, and mother of the child (her participation is optional, but recommended).

After that, parents should provide the following documents:

  • A recent passport-sized photo.
  • Provide any of your National Identification Card (Ghana Card, Voter’s ID, Passport, Driver’s License)
  • Birth certificate of the alleged child.

How long does a DNA test take in Ghana?

Results take 3-5 working days for Paternity testing and 5-10 working days for more complex cases.

How is a DNA paternity test performed In Ghana?

There are two equally accurate ways to test for paternity:

Blood tests

The potential father and child give blood samples at a medical office. The facility sends the samples to a lab for analysis.

Cheek swabs

The child’s possible father swabs the inside of his cheeks for buccal (cheek) cells. The cotton swab applicators are mailed to a designated lab. If swabbing is done in a medical environment, the samples are sent to a lab by the office.

How is paternity confirmed?

The lab runs a series of tests called DNA sequencing. These tests look for genetic matches between the potential father and child. A match confirms paternity.

Can a test determine paternity during pregnancy?

There are three different ways to test paternity before a baby is born. The tests are as accurate as those performed after a child’s birth. The three methods include:

  • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS): A little sample of tissue from the placenta is taken by a healthcare practitioner. The mother’s cervix or abdomen is used for this surgery. The DNA from the sample is compared to the mother’s and prospective father’s DNA in a lab. CVS usually occurs 10 to 13 weeks following a woman’s last menstrual period. There is a small chance of miscarriage or pregnancy loss with this surgery.
  • Amniocentesis: A healthcare worker extracts a little amount of amniotic fluid during amniocentesis. A needle is injected into the mother’s abdomen for the test. The fluid sample is compared to DNA from the mother and prospective father in a lab. Between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy, amniocentesis is performed. The test raises the chance of a miscarriage by a little amount.
  • Noninvasive prenatal paternity test (NIPP): This test analyzes fetal DNA found in a pregnant woman’s blood during the first trimester. A lab specialist compares the fetal DNA information to DNA from the potential father’s cheek cell sample.

Can you use a DNA ancestry test to prove paternity?

An ancestry DNA can identify potential DNA matches, but only a DNA paternity test can prove a father-child DNA match.

Summary on How DNA Test is Performed In Ghana

It’s never been easier to conduct a paternity test to establish a biological relationship thanks to recent advances in genetics. All we need is for the two people involved to go to a DNA facility and have a mouth swab taken by a doctor. All of our doctors are highly qualified and take mouth swab samples on a daily basis. This is a quick and painless treatment that will take only a few seconds.

After the samples are extracted, they will be transferred to our laboratory, where forensic experts will analyse them to see if the two people are related biologically.
